About AEnvCoW Membership

AEnvCoW membership is for professionals working in the development industry, who support improvements to drive environmental compliance during construction and delivery of projects. Membership provides professional recognition, supports good practice, and strengthens environmental compliance across construction and development.

Before applying, all applicants must read and demonstrate their understanding, and implementation, of AEnvCoW’s definition of an EnvCoW, which is set out in our Position Statement on the Role of an EnvCoW, as this is the cornerstone of everything we do.

We hold four membership application review meetings each year. Please refer to the 'Application Process' section below for the relevant application deadlines.

Why join AEnvCoW?

AEnvCoW is the professional body for environmental practitioners who work in development or construction and especially those who deliver the EnvCoW role, or those who interact, or want to drive compliance We exist to raise standards and highlight the EnvCoWs profession, so that they are respected and used correctly.

By becoming a member, you:

  • Gain professional recognition: Grade membership confirms that your work aligns with AEnvCoW’s definition of an EnvCoW as an independent compliance and auditing function. This helps demonstrate credibility to employers, clients and regulators.

  • Strengthen your professional standing: Graded membership shows where you sit within a competency framework, which has been benchmarked against other industry membership organisations, therefore, supporting career progression and meeting client or contractual competency requirements.

  • Access high-quality learning and guidance: Members can attend all webinars for free, access a growing library of recorded training and stay up to date with best practice, policy and industry change.

  • Save money on events and training: Members receive discounted rates for AEnvCoW conferences and courses, often offsetting the cost of membership.

  • Influence standards and practice: AEnvCoW members have the opportunity to contribute to guidance, research and policy work that shapes how EnvCoWs are understood and applied across the industry.

Whether you are an experienced EnvCoW, building your career, or working in a related field, membership places you inside the organisation that defines and advances environmental compliance for development projects.

What is an EnvCoW?

AEnvCoW defines an Environmental Clerk of Works (EnvCoW) as:

“An independent environmental or construction professional with direct responsibility for monitoring and reporting on compliance with planning consents, environmental permits, legislation and mitigation.”

This definition is set out in AEnvCoW’s Position Statement on the Role of an EnvCoW and underpins all graded membership applications. Applicants must demonstrate that they understand the definition and that their work aligns with this monitoring and compliance role – not general environmental advisory, management or ecological consultancy work. Whilst AEnvCoW recognises that there is a wide range of scopes in contracts, we only wish to review your relevant experience in relation to compliance monitoring / auditing.

AEnvCoW offers four membership grades:

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Your membership period begins from the date you submit your application, not from the date it is reviewed or approved.

As the application fee covers 12 months of membership from the application submission date, your initial year will be slightly truncated to account for the application period. We recommend submitting your application as close as possible to the relevant submission deadline outlined in the Application Process section above. This helps you maximise your membership period for your first year.
